Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of places around the world to enjoy a safari experience outside of Africa. Sri Lanka, Canada, Australia, and the majority of South America are popular safari destinations — however, there is a reason that Africa is the first place many people will think of when it comes to safari holidays. The truth is, nothing comes close to Africa if you’re looking for an adventure with animals. Here are just some of the many reasons why Africa is the perfect destination for a safari getaway.
If you have kept up with any of my previous posts on Africa, then you’ll know I am in love with this beautiful country. The culture here is unlike anything you will likely experience anywhere else in the world, and the vastness of the continent means that it is all so diverse.
One of my favourite aspects of African culture are their dances — from ritual dances through to griotic dances; there is something so fascinating about watching this activity take place. Of course, there are plenty of reasons to go on safari, but experiencing the culture of the country is one of the main reasons you must go!
One of the most obvious reasons people go on safari is to see the animals — in fact, for some, it’s the only reason to go on safari. Luckily, Africa plays host to some of the most incredible animals on the planet. It is the only place in the world to catch sight of all the Big Five in their natural habitat: buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino. Dotted around Africa, you will find jaw-dropping game and safari parks, along with reserves. It doesn’t matter what kind of safari experience you’re after, or what kind of animals you want to see; there’s a good chance you are going to catch a glimpse of them in Africa.
After spending a long day watching lions and elephants, you may want to put your feet up for some rest and relaxation. Many people forget that Africa isn’t always hustle and bustle or animal watching. In fact, this continent has some of the world’s best beaches — if you know where to look!
Some companies will organise specific safari and beach tours so that you get to see the best of both worlds. Spend a few days photographing the Big Five, then a few more days on the white sanded beaches of Tanzania. It’s like a dream come true!
If you’re planning on travelling across Africa, then be prepared to see something new and unique at nearly every turn. One minute you could be in the bustling coastal city of Cape Town and the next you could be in a secluded village — there is so much variety here. This makes it the perfect destination for a safari getaway as no two days are going to be the same. You could spend some of your time roughing it in a rustic tent, before opting for a luxury lodge in another part of the continent. You will never get bored in Africa!
Did you know that Africa had so much to offer? While you could consider other destinations around the world for a safari holiday, it’s clear to see that this continent ticks all of the boxes.
